Driving Stronger Catchments for Thriving Communities
The Cassowary Coast River Improvement Trust is a not-for-profit, community based, statutory authority dedicated to the sustainable management and enhancement of river catchments within the Cassowary Coast region.
Operating across over 120 kilometres of coastline, the Trust focuses on four major river catchments – Johnstone, Tully, Liverpool and Murray – that flow into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

Our Mission
Our mission is to implement strategic, science-based projects that mitigate flood risks, reduce bank erosion, and improve water quality, thereby contributing to the health of both our local ecosystems and the Great Barrier Reef.
Through collaborative efforts with government agencies, local communities, and Traditional Owners, we strive to protect and restore the natural integrity of our waterways for current and future generations.
Protecting & Restoring Our Rivers
The Cassowary Coast’s river catchments are vital natural assets, supporting diverse ecosystems, local communities, and industries while flowing into the globally significant Great Barrier Reef. These waterways sustain rich biodiversity and shape the landscapes that define our region. However, they face growing challenges from erosion, extreme weather, invasive species, and human impacts.
Healthy rivers mean resilient catchments. When riverbanks erode, sediment washes downstream, reducing water quality, damaging marine habitats, and increasing flood risks. By investing in restoration and sustainable management, we protect not only our waterways but also the ecosystems and communities that depend on them.

Our vision is to build resilient, well-managed river systems that support healthy catchments, reduce environmental degradation, and enhance community resilience.
Our work involves:
- Implementing strategic riverbank stabilisation and erosion control projects
- Supporting landholders with best-practice waterway management advice
- Facilitating flood mitigation initiatives to protect people and property
- Enhancing fish habitats and improving water quality for the Great Barrier Reef
- Partnering with government, industry, and communities to drive sustainable outcomes
By restoring and protecting our rivers, we safeguard the future of our catchments, our communities, and our environment.
